Surviving a tsunami
How to survive
Tsunamis may only occur about twice a year, but you can never know when a tsunami will happen. Though you may not know that a tsunami is coming you will get a official tsunami warning. When you do hear this alarm the first thing you would need to do is gather all your family members including pets and evacuate to higher land. You must evacuate into higher land because after the tsunami passes a flood may occur which is why it is better to be in higher elevation. Also it is important to have an emergency preparedness kit with you before you evacuate because not only will it make you feel more comfortable when evacuating but it can also save lives. You must have in your emergency preparedness kit, water (one gallon per person; three day supply), food (non-perishable three day supply), flashlight, battery powered or hand crank radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, medications, multi purpose tool, sanitation and personal hygiene items, copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies), cell phone with chargers, family contact information, extra cash, emergency blanket, and a map of the area. If you follow these instructions you can consider yourself ready for survival when a tsunami occurs.
What can be done before the disaster happens to keep you safe and alive?
- Always have a emergency medical kit ready.
- Practice the evacuation plan with your family, make sure that it is high elevation and that you can get to the location in fifteen minutes top.
- Learn your communities evacuation plan and warning alarm system.
- Know the height of your home and the sea level to know the elevation to evacuate to.
- If their is an earthquake that lasts for more than ten seconds then turn on your radio and listen for an emergency tsunami warning.
How much time should you prepare for?
- Only return home if local officials tell you that it is safe to do so because tsunamis are known for having a series of waves that hit harder one wave after another so stay in the area you are in.
- Stay away from the debris and check for any injuries on you and the surrounding people.
- If you see someone in trouble that needs help, call a professional to come aid them. If there are any elders that requires assistance then help do so.
- Keep a radio on to stayed updated on the tsunamis.
- Stay away from any buildings that has any water around it, tsunamis can create cracks in walls which leads to the walls falling/ breaking. Watch your surrounding carefully and watch every step you take.
